IF I HAVE JESUS, I HAVE IT ALL
Key Scripture:
"Yes indeed, I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord..." — Philippians 3:8
Introduction: The Greatest Possession
We live in a world obsessed with accumulation. More money. More possessions. More followers. More status. More security. Society constantly whispers that happiness is found in having more.
Yet countless people who have everything this world offers still go to sleep empty.
The Christian message turns worldly thinking upside down: if you have Jesus, you already possess what matters most.
A man may own mansions and still be poor in soul. Another may own little but possess Christ and be eternally rich.
The greatest treasure is not found in what fills your hands—but in Who fills your heart.
Background and Context of the Scripture
The apostle Paul wrote Philippians while imprisoned. From a worldly perspective, Paul had lost almost everything—freedom, comfort, status, possessions, and safety.
Yet remarkably, this imprisoned man writes repeatedly about joy.
Why?
Because Paul discovered something greater than circumstances.
Before conversion, Paul possessed religious status, influence, education, and recognition. But after encountering Christ, his entire value system changed.
He declared that everything else became secondary compared to knowing Jesus.
Paul discovered a truth many spend their entire lives chasing:
Christ is enough.
Understanding the Message: Why Jesus Is Everything
Having Jesus means possessing far more than religion.
It means:
- When you have Jesus, you have forgiveness for your failures.
- When you have Jesus, you have hope beyond your suffering.
- When you have Jesus, you have peace in uncertainty.
- When you have Jesus, you have purpose for living.
- When you have Jesus, you have victory over death itself.
The world measures wealth by possessions.
Heaven measures wealth by relationship with Christ.
Many chase blessings while forgetting the Blesser.
Many desire heaven while neglecting the Savior.
Jesus never intended merely to improve your life.
He came to become your life.
When Christ becomes enough, everything else finds its proper place.
Practical Lessons for Everyday Christian Living
1. Do Not Build Your Identity on Temporary Things
Careers change.
Money disappears.
Health fades.
Relationships disappoint.
Public approval shifts.
If your identity rests on unstable foundations, your peace becomes unstable too.
Build your identity upon Christ.
When everything shakes, He remains.
2. Learn Contentment in Every Season
Contentment does not mean having everything.
Contentment means knowing Christ is sufficient regardless of circumstances.
Some worship God only when blessings overflow.
Mature faith learns to worship when the cupboard is empty, the answers are delayed, and the future is unclear.
3. Pursue Relationship More Than Religion
Many know church.
Many know doctrine.
Many know religious routines.
But eternal life is not merely knowing about Jesus.
It is knowing Him personally.
Prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience are not duties to complete.
They are pathways into deeper fellowship.
4. Hold Earthly Things Loosely
God gives blessings to enjoy.
But blessings make terrible gods.
Anything that replaces Christ in your heart eventually controls your heart.
Keep Jesus first.
Everything else belongs beneath Him.
Biblical Examples That Reinforce This Truth
Job: When Everything Was Taken Away
Job lost wealth.
He lost children.
He lost health.
He lost security.
Yet amid unimaginable suffering, he declared:
"Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him."
Job understood something profound:
Circumstances changed.
God did not.
Peter: Leaving Everything to Follow Christ
When Jesus called fishermen to follow Him, they left boats, nets, and livelihoods behind.
Why?
Because they discovered Someone greater than what they surrendered.
You never truly lose what you give up for Christ.
The Rich Young Ruler
A wealthy young ruler approached Jesus seeking eternal life.
His tragedy was not merely wealth.
His tragedy was that he loved possessions more than Christ.
He walked away sorrowful.
He had riches.
But he rejected the greatest treasure.
Paul: From Status to Surrender
Paul exchanged religious prestige for persecution.
Yet he repeatedly described himself as rich.
Why?
Because he possessed Christ.
Spiritual Applications for Modern Life
Today many people say:
"If I get more money, then I'll be happy."
"If I find the right relationship, then I'll have peace."
"If my problems disappear, then I'll trust God."
But the human heart always wants more.
Only Christ satisfies permanently.
Modern culture teaches:
- Consume more
- Achieve more
- Own more
- Become more
Jesus says:
"Come to Me."
The deepest poverty is not lacking possessions.
It is living without Christ.
The greatest wealth is not having everything.
It is having Him.
Encouragement and Conviction
Perhaps today you feel empty.
Perhaps prayers seem unanswered.
Perhaps life has taken things from you.
Remember this:
If you still have Christ—
You still have hope.
You still have purpose.
You still have grace.
You still have eternal promises.
You still have a Savior who will never leave.
But this truth also brings conviction.
Have worldly pursuits quietly taken first place?
Have comfort, success, entertainment, or ambition slowly displaced Jesus?
Christ does not want a corner of your life.
He deserves the center.
A Heartfelt Closing Appeal
One day possessions will remain behind.
Titles will disappear.
Achievements will fade.
Only what is rooted in Christ will endure.
Do not spend your life chasing things that cannot satisfy.
Run after Jesus.
Seek Him more than comfort.
Love Him more than success.
Treasure Him more than possessions.
Because when you truly possess Christ—
You possess what cannot be stolen,
what cannot decay,
what cannot die.
And if you have Jesus—
you truly have it all.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving us something greater than earthly success, possessions, or comfort.
Forgive us for the times we have sought fulfillment in temporary things instead of in You.
Teach us to treasure Jesus above everything else.
Help us remain faithful when life is difficult and grateful when life is good.
Remove every idol competing for our hearts.
Create within us a deeper hunger for Your presence, Your Word, and Your will.
May we learn that Christ is sufficient in every season.
And when everything else fades, may our hearts still declare:
"Jesus is enough."
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
