Devotional on Colossians 2:16–17
“Let no man therefore judge you… which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.”
In his letter to the believers recorded in Epistle to the Colossians, the apostle Paul the Apostle reminds the church that faith is not about living under the weight of ceremonial regulations, but about living in the freedom of Christ.
The Old Testament sanctuary services — the feast days, new moons, sacrifices, and ceremonial sabbaths — were beautiful shadows. They pointed forward to something greater. Every lamb sacrificed whispered His name. Every holy day anticipated His saving work.
But when Jesus came, the shadow met its Substance.
A shadow has shape, but not fullness. It gives an outline, but not the living presence. Christ is the reality. He is the fulfillment of every promise, every symbol, every prophetic picture.
Paul’s message is clear: Do not let anyone judge your standing with God based on ceremonial practices that have already found their completion in Christ. Your righteousness is not in ritual. It is in a Person.
Today, the invitation is simple:
Don’t cling to the shadow when you have the Savior.
Don’t focus on forms when you have the fullness.
Rest in Christ — for He is enough.
May you walk today not in religious pressure, but in the joyful freedom of knowing that the Substance belongs to Christ — and in Him, you are complete.
