What Truly Defiles a Person

What Truly Defiles a Person

Mark 7:18–23

In Gospel of Mark 7:18–23, Jesus explains an important spiritual principle about purity. The discussion arises after the Pharisees criticized His disciples for eating without following ceremonial hand-washing traditions. Jesus responds by shifting the focus from external rituals to the condition of the human heart.

1. Defilement Does Not Come From Food

Jesus first explains that food entering the body cannot spiritually defile a person.

Whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him, because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated.” (Mark 7:18–19)

The point is that physical food affects the body, not the moral or spiritual character. The Pharisees had elevated ceremonial rules about eating into matters of righteousness. Jesus clarifies that sin is not transmitted through food but through the heart.

For His listeners, this corrected the misunderstanding that religious purity was maintained primarily by external observances.

2. Sin Comes From Within the Heart

Jesus then gives the central teaching:

What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.” (Mark 7:20)

The heart in Scripture represents the center of thoughts, motives, and desires. Jesus teaches that moral corruption originates inside the human nature, not outside influences like food.

This aligns with the biblical teaching about the fallen human condition (see Book of Jeremiah 17:9, which says the heart is deceitful).

3. Jesus Lists the Sins That Come From the Heart

Christ then names specific sins that proceed from within:

  • Evil thoughts
  • Adulteries
  • Fornications
  • Murders
  • Thefts
  • Covetousness
  • Wickedness
  • Deceit
  • Lasciviousness (sensuality)
  • An evil eye (envy)
  • Blasphemy
  • Pride
  • Foolishness

These sins begin as internal attitudes and desires, which eventually produce sinful actions.

4. True Purity Is a Matter of the Heart

Jesus concludes:

All these evil things come from within, and defile a man.” (Mark 7:23)

The message is clear: spiritual defilement is moral, not ceremonial. A person may keep religious traditions yet still be spiritually corrupt if the heart is unchanged.

This teaching challenges legalism and emphasizes inner transformation rather than mere outward conformity.

5. Spiritual Implication

The passage teaches several key truths:

Sin originates in the human heart.

External rituals cannot make a person spiritually pure.

True righteousness requires inner cleansing and transformation.

God is concerned primarily with character and motives.

Only through Christ can the heart be renewed (see Book of Ezekiel 36:26, where God promises a new heart).

Summary:

Mark 7:18–23 teaches that what truly defiles a person is not what they eat or external religious practices, but the sinful thoughts and desires that originate in the heart. Jesus shifts the focus of religion from ritual purity to moral purity, calling people to inward transformation.
