From Lukewarm to Living Fire

From Lukewarm to Living Fire”

Scripture Reading: Revelation 3:16

Opening Thought

There are few words in Scripture as searching as these:

“Because thou art lukewarm… I will spue thee out of my mouth.”

This message, spoken by Christ to the church of Laodicea, is not just a historical warning—it is a present truth for our hearts today. It calls us to examine not just what we profess, but how we truly live before God.

The Danger of Lukewarm Faith

Lukewarmness is a subtle condition. It is not open rebellion, nor is it vibrant devotion. It is the quiet middle ground where:

  • Worship becomes routine instead of heartfelt
  • Prayer becomes occasional instead of essential
  • Faith becomes words instead of a living experience

A lukewarm Christian may look fine outwardly, yet inwardly lacks spiritual fire. There is no urgency, no deep hunger for God—only comfort and complacency.

A Message They Understood

The people of Laodicea knew exactly what Jesus meant. Their water supply was neither hot nor cold—it was tepid and unpleasant.

Just as lukewarm water refreshes no one and heals no one, so a lukewarm spiritual life has no power, no witness, and no transformation.

Christ’s Strong Warning

When Jesus says He will “spue” the lukewarm out of His mouth, it reveals how deeply He rejects half-hearted devotion.

Why such a strong response?

Because lukewarmness:

  • Misrepresents God’s character
  • Deceives the believer into false security
  • Keeps the soul from true repentance

It is not that God hates the person—but He cannot accept a faith that is empty and indifferent.

The Loving Invitation

Yet even in this warning, there is hope. Just a few verses later, Jesus lovingly pleads:

“Be zealous therefore, and repent.” (Revelation 3:19)

And even more tenderly:

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock…” (Revelation 3:20)

Christ does not walk away—He knocks. He calls. He waits.

No matter how lukewarm we may have become, revival is still possible.

A Call to Renewal

This Sabbath, God invites us to move:

  • From routine → to relationship
  • From indifference → to passion
  • From lukewarm → to living fire

Let us ask ourselves:

  • Am I truly seeking God daily?
  • Is my heart warm toward Him—or just familiar with Him?
  • Have I settled into comfort instead of growth?

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Search our hearts today. Where we have become lukewarm, awaken us.

Where we have grown comfortable, stir within us a holy fire.

Teach us to love You deeply, to seek You earnestly, and to live for You fully.

Revive us again, Lord, and make our lives a testimony of Your transforming power.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Reflection

God is not looking for perfection—He is looking for passion.

He does not desire a divided heart, but a devoted one.

This Sabbath, open the door. Let Christ come in—and let Him turn your lukewarm faith into a burning flame of love and devotion
