The Danger of Pride
Key Text: “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18 (KJV)
Pride is one of the most subtle and destructive sins in the human heart. It often disguises itself as confidence, self-sufficiency, or even spiritual maturity. Yet beneath its surface lies a quiet rebellion against God—a refusal to depend on Him fully.
The Bible consistently warns about the danger of pride. It was pride that led to the fall of Lucifer, who desired to exalt himself above God. It was pride that caused King Nebuchadnezzar to boast in his own greatness, only to be humbled by God. And it is pride that still causes many today to trust in their own strength instead of surrendering to God’s will.
Pride blinds us. It makes us less aware of our weaknesses and less willing to admit our need for grace. A proud heart resists correction, avoids repentance, and struggles to love others genuinely. It elevates self while diminishing God.
In contrast, God calls us to humility. Scripture says, “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble” (James 4:6). Humility opens the door for God’s power to work in our lives. It allows us to see ourselves clearly and to depend fully on Him.
Jesus is our greatest example. Though He was divine, He humbled Himself, taking the form of a servant and submitting to the will of the Father—even unto death. True greatness in God’s kingdom is found not in lifting ourselves up, but in bowing low before Him.
Today, examine your heart. Are there areas where pride has taken root—perhaps in your achievements, knowledge, or spiritual life? Ask God to reveal them and to replace pride with a humble and teachable spirit.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, search my heart and reveal any pride within me. Help me to walk in humility, recognizing my need for You in every area of my life. Teach me to depend on Your strength and not my own. Make me more like Christ, who humbled Himself for my sake. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
