Seek First the Kingdom

Seek First the Kingdom

Scripture: Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

One of humanity's greatest struggles is determining what should come first in life. We often place our careers first, our finances first, our ambitions first, and sometimes even our own comfort first. Yet Jesus turns our priorities upside down with a simple but powerful command: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God."

Notice that Jesus does not say to seek God's kingdom second, third, or whenever we have spare time. He says to seek it first. The Lord desires the highest place in our hearts, our thoughts, our plans, and our affections. When God occupies first place, everything else finds its proper place.

The context of this verse is important. Jesus had been speaking about food, clothing, and the necessities of life. He knew that people worry about paying bills, providing for their families, and securing their futures. Yet instead of encouraging anxiety, He points His listeners to faith. The God who feeds the birds and clothes the lilies is fully aware of our needs.

Too often we pursue blessings while neglecting the Blesser. We seek provision before seeking the Provider. We chase opportunities while ignoring obedience. But Jesus teaches that when God's kingdom becomes our primary pursuit, we can trust Him to care for the details of our lives.

Consider the example of King Solomon. When given the opportunity to ask for anything, he sought wisdom to honor God and lead His people. Because he sought God's purposes first, the Lord added blessings he had not even requested. God still works that way today. He delights in blessing those whose hearts are fully devoted to Him.

Seeking God's kingdom means spending time in His Word, cultivating a life of prayer, pursuing righteousness, serving others, and placing His will above our own desires. It means asking each day, "Lord, what would You have me do?" rather than, "Lord, bless what I have already decided to do."

Many people spend their lives running after things that eventually perish. Houses deteriorate, money loses value, careers end, and earthly achievements fade. But the kingdom of God is eternal. Every investment made in God's kingdom will outlast this present world.

Today, examine your priorities. What occupies your thoughts? What consumes your time? What receives your greatest devotion? If anything has taken God's rightful place, surrender it to Him. The promise remains true: when we seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, He will faithfully provide what we truly need.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times I have allowed earthly concerns to overshadow my pursuit of You. Help me to seek Your kingdom first in every area of my life. Teach me to trust Your provision, follow Your will, and delight in Your presence above all else. May my life reflect a heart fully surrendered to Your purposes. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Thought for Today:
When God is first in your life, you do not have to chase every blessing—many blessings will follow the path of your obedience.
