Strength That Serves

Devotional Thought: Strength That Serves

Scripture: Romans 15:1–3 (KJV)
"We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me."

In a world that celebrates independence and self-advancement, the apostle Paul presents a different kind of strength — a strength that serves.

True spiritual maturity is not measured by how much we know, how long we have been in the faith, or how confidently we stand. It is measured by how willingly we stoop to lift someone else. Those who are “strong” in faith are not called to dominate, criticize, or distance themselves from the “weak.” Instead, we are called to bear their infirmities — to carry, support, and patiently uphold them.

This kind of love is not self-centered. Paul reminds us, “not to please ourselves.” Christianity is not about protecting our comfort or proving our point. It is about building others up. Our words, attitudes, and actions should aim at edification — strengthening another person’s walk with God.

The ultimate example is Christ Himself. He did not live to please Himself. Jesus Christ bore our reproach, our sin, our weakness. He carried what we could not carry on our own. The cross is the greatest demonstration of strength expressed through sacrifice.

When we help someone struggling in faith, when we respond gently instead of harshly, when we sacrifice our preference for someone else’s spiritual growth, we reflect the heart of Christ.

Today, ask yourself:

  • Who around me needs support rather than judgment?
  • How can I use my strength to build someone up?
  • Am I living to please myself, or to reflect Christ?

May God give us strength — not to elevate ourselves, but to serve others in love.

Prayer:
Lord, teach me to use the strength You have given me to lift others. Guard me from selfishness and impatience. Help me reflect the selfless love of Christ in all I do. Amen.
