Keep Your Lamp Burning

Keep Your Lamp Burning

Scripture: Matthew 25:1–13

There is something deeply sobering about the Parable of the Ten Virgins. Ten people, all waiting. Ten lamps, all burning at one point. Ten who expected to meet the bridegroom. And yet—only five were ready when it mattered most.

Jesus is not just telling a story about a wedding. He is revealing a spiritual reality that cuts straight to the heart: not everyone who appears ready actually is.

The difference between the wise and the foolish virgins was not obvious at first. They all looked the same. They all had lamps. They all waited. They all even fell asleep. But when the midnight cry rang out—“Behold, the bridegroom is coming!”—their true condition was revealed.

The wise had oil. The foolish did not.

That oil represents something deeper than mere appearance. It points to a living, personal connection with God—a faith that is sustained, not superficial. It cannot be borrowed. It cannot be transferred. And it cannot be rushed at the last minute.

When the moment came, the foolish virgins realized too late that preparation is not something you can improvise.

And that is the warning for us.

It is possible to be around truth, to hear the Word, to identify with the people of God—and still not be ready. It is possible to carry a “lamp” of profession without the “oil” of genuine spiritual life. But when Christ returns, there will be no time left to prepare. The door that is open now will not remain open forever.

This is not meant to create fear—it is meant to awaken urgency.

Jesus is calling us to something real. Not a last-minute faith. Not a surface-level commitment. But a daily, abiding relationship with Him—one that keeps the lamp burning even through the long delay, even through the silence, even through the night.

Because the truth is, the bridegroom is coming.

And when He does, readiness will not be measured by what we claimed—but by what we cultivated.

So examine your lamp.

Is your faith sustained when no one is watching?
Is your relationship with God alive, or just familiar?
Are you preparing daily, or assuming there will always be more time?

The cry will come—suddenly, unmistakably.

And in that moment, only one thing will matter:
Were you ready?

Prayer:
Lord, keep my lamp burning. Give me not just the appearance of faith, but a deep and living relationship with You. Help me to seek You daily, to walk with You faithfully, and to be ready at all times. Let me not be found unprepared when You come. Amen.
