Remember Lot’s Wife
Key Text:
Luke 17:32
“Remember Lot’s wife.”
Opening Thought
It is striking that in the midst of teaching about the last days, Jesus pauses to give a three-word warning: “Remember Lot’s wife.” Such a short statement, yet filled with eternal weight. Why would Christ want us to remember her?
The Story Behind the Warning
The account is found in Genesis 19. God was delivering Lot and his family from the wicked city of Sodom. The instruction was clear: escape for your life—do not look back.
But Lot’s wife did look back.
It wasn’t just a glance—it was a heart turning back toward what she was leaving behind. In that moment, she became a pillar of salt—a solemn monument of misplaced affection.
Spiritual Lessons for Today
1. Deliverance Requires Decision
God was rescuing Lot’s family, but their cooperation mattered. Salvation is offered freely, but we must choose to follow fully—without hesitation.
2. Looking Back Reveals the Heart
Lot’s wife physically left Sodom, but Sodom had not left her. Her backward look revealed lingering attachment. Sometimes we move forward outwardly, but inwardly we cling to what God has called us to leave.
3. The Danger of Divided Affection
Jesus later teaches in the same passage that we cannot preserve our lives by holding onto the world. A divided heart is a dangerous place to live.
4. A Warning for the Last Days
Christ connects this story directly to His second coming. Just as judgment came suddenly to Sodom, so it will be when He returns. The call is urgency, readiness, and wholehearted surrender.
Personal Reflection
- Is there anything in my life I keep “looking back” to?
- Have I truly surrendered what God has asked me to leave behind?
- Am I preparing my heart for Christ’s soon return?
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Help me not to look back at the things You have delivered me from. Give me a heart fully committed to You, with no divided loyalties. Strengthen me to move forward in faith, trusting Your leading every step of the way. Keep me ready for Your coming, I pray.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Closing Thought
“Remember Lot’s wife” is more than a warning—it is an invitation to wholehearted commitment. Don’t just leave Sodom… let Sodom leave you.
