Some Friends Will Drag You to Hell
Key Text: “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” — 1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV)
There is a hard truth many people avoid: not everyone in your circle is helping you get closer to God. Some relationships, no matter how enjoyable or long-standing, are quietly pulling you away from righteousness and toward destruction.
The Bible warns us clearly—do not be deceived. Influence is powerful. The people you spend time with shape your thoughts, your habits, and ultimately your destiny. What begins as harmless association can slowly erode your convictions. A joke here, a compromise there, and before long, your spiritual fire begins to dim.
Not all friendship is godly friendship.
Some friends normalize sin.
Some make light of what God calls serious.
Some pressure you to compromise your values.
And some will walk with you—comfortably—down a path that leads away from life and toward eternal loss.
Consider the company you keep. Are they encouraging prayer, faith, and obedience? Or are they drawing you into gossip, immorality, dishonesty, and spiritual indifference?
The truth is, people don’t have to hate you to harm you. Sometimes, they simply don’t love God enough to lead you in the right direction.
God calls His people to be set apart. This doesn’t mean we avoid everyone, but it does mean we must be discerning. Even Jesus, full of love and grace, chose His inner circle carefully.
You cannot walk in the counsel of the ungodly and expect to stand in the strength of the righteous.
If a friendship is costing you your peace, your purity, or your relationship with God—it is too expensive.
Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is step away.
Reflection:
- Are my closest relationships drawing me closer to God or further away?
- What habits or compromises have I picked up from others?
- Is God calling me to separate from certain influences?
Prayer: Lord, give me discernment to recognize relationships that are not pleasing to You. Help me to be strong enough to walk away from influences that pull me down, and wise enough to surround myself with those who encourage my faith. Lead me in paths of righteousness, and place godly people in my life who will help me grow closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
